Principal's message

Background of the school
The name of the school Tlamelang means "Provide for", "Take care of" in terms of all the learners needs. The motto of the school is "Re a kgona" meaning that we can in spite of our challenges. The school was established in 1966 by the Dutch people and is situated in Gelukspan District Hospital which is 43 km away from Mafikeng. The school is in a deep rural area in the North West Province. The school is been build in the Government land. Tlamelang Special school is admitting learners from different areas, mainly from North West Province. The school is no fee public special school catering 182 learners with physical disabilities as a primary disability. The school offers main stream curriculum and starts from grade 1 to grade 12, with commercial subjects as our core.

Learner conditions
Tlamelang is a special school that caters for children with disabilities which are coupled with health conditions. Physical disabilities range from mild to severe. For a child to qualify for admission, one needs to have physical and health conditions listed below:

Cerebral palsy
Epilepsy
Spina bifida
Scoliosis
Muscular dystrophy
T.B of spine

Support services offered to our learners are:

Hostel
All our learners are accommodated in the hostel with round the clock care and support of a team of dedicated support staff.

Catering
A service provider has been hired since 2008 to feed the learners. Three meals and snack in between are served to learners.

Clinic
The school operates health care services to all the learners. We arrange and escourt learners for their appointment to different hospitals. We administer daily medication, dressings and other so much needed health care and assistance.

Physio department
Learners receive physio therapy in accordance to their needs. Arrangements are also made for their orthopaedic needs and supplies e.g. shoes, crutches, etc.

Social & welfare
At the moment the school does not have a school-based Social worker, Social worker visit the school every Tuesday and Thursday.

Sports
Our learners partake in the following sports codes: Wheelchair basketball, CP Soccer, Boccia, Table tennis, Track & field events. The school has produced many athletes competing nationally and internationally. Some of the learners have established themselves as far as national and international level on sports.

Music & Arts
Learners partake annually in school music competitions where they always bring home trophies.
